I think Ohio works better; as I recall, it's basically the same chart as is shown for it if you replace 1976 with 1944.

Quickly looking at it, Nevada also seems to be a bellwether with gay marriage and the evolution controversy too. (Then again, so does Ohio.) If we care about junk like "demographics", then we might have some problems (both NV and OH are "whiter" than the US as a whole), but both look equally good as bellwethers right now.

Maybe they should be called a lemming state instead of a bellwhether state. Just goin' with the crowd. Nevada: the "me too" state.
